Extremely Powerful Log Aggregator
We aggregated security logs and transnational data into Splunk to combat fraud to much success. Highly recommend trying it out.
Vorteile
The best part about Splunk is that it is incredibly flexible. Any type of log can be aggregated and its awesome to build correlation. Any thing you want to know from your data can be found with Splunk.
Nachteile
The ability of Splunk comes at a cost, literally. There is a free edition but if you are using it in an enterprise environment, especially if there is more than one department uses it, it will be pricey. However given the functionality its still a good value for many enterprises.

Thumbs up for error log collection and be able to query on that logs
1) time! (directly proportional to number of servers to manage)
2) graphs gives you lot of information and act quickly.
Vorteile
1) Querying the logs with ease.
2) Statistics on the logs gives you greater insight into whats happening with your system.
3) Group error logs by type, by server.. etc.
4) Professional interface.
Nachteile
does what it says, no question about that but learning how to query took some time in the beginning. so, a small learning curve there.

Easy to use once set up

The ability to set up alerts and reports based on logs that come in from almost anywhere and anything in our network.
Nachteile
In can be a bit of a bear to get set up but that is the case with almost any enterprise level software like this.

Overall a decent product.

- Need to regex well in order to use the tool to its full ability
- Ability to extract values out of the log statements could be simpler

If you want SIEM, it's splunk and only splunk
Great company, great company, amazing high price tag....
Vorteile
It dominates the industry in SIEM.... People would love to hate it... it's critical in terms of looking at your logs and seeing if something is not right and you have hackers or unwanted people on your system. It's the industry leader and has all the cool features.
Nachteile
The price.. it's expensive and you have vendor lock-in... All my clients hate it for the price, but love it for its features and leading R&D.

There are TONS of capabilities. The software can handle a lot of data and is able to produce query results in a short amount of time.
Nachteile
The software is difficult to use (I didn't have to set it up) and the query structure and syntax is very clumsy and non-intuitive.

Huge Splunk Fan!
Vorteile
I really like the overall feel of Splunk, it integrates with many other products very well. Even has independent add-ons for Cisco and Microsoft Products.
Nachteile
Pricing of Spunk can get very expensive. I have experience with the windows version of splunk and sometimes it can be difficult to troubleshoot.

Hadoop analysis is good for Fixed size dataset. Splunk product captures, indexes real-time data in a searchable repository from which it can generate graphs, reports, and visualizations which are very easy and helpful to understand the data.
Nachteile
I think there are no features which I do not like. I think during clustering I faced some problems thats it.

We used Splunk as part of our compliance and delivery for email marketing. The tool itself requires some industry knowledge and a day or two of hands-on training, however, once you get the hang of it's pretty easy and very useful in order to dig into consumer/user data.

Very good but very expensive
We used Splunk as a 'google for our app logs'. It worked very well, the only problem was that our budget could afford only so much GBs of logs and every now and then we had to flush the logs.

Another powerful option for BI
In general I think is a powerful tool but a little confusing to use at the beginning although I really enjoyed the fact that I was able to installed it in Linux, not every BI tool that I've tried will let you do that.
Vorteile
The charts and visualizations that you can create in general have a good look and it has the minimum functionalities expected as a user (export, filtering, search, etc), I spent some time trying to understand the interface and functionalities but once I started to load some data and use the search I was able to see the capabilities of the product.
Nachteile
I did not like the limitations of the free version like the size of the data you can upload but I guess is still fair to be able to use it for free.

I've been using Splunk for a while, and I still find the query process a bit difficult. For non-technical people, there is a steep learning curve.

This has been a very valuable tool for my company. It's well thought out from security to usability. I feel I'm not getting full use due to the lack of support and training resources/references available.

Splunk is nice tool to analyze the logs, visualize the transaction, creating auto alerts, creating Splunk's Search Processing Language (SPL) queries, creating dashboards. It is very powerful to analyze the logs. Splunk performance gets impacted if we search for data over a long period of time. License is bit costly.
