The overall interface and simplicity is what made Canto our favorite. The interface allowed us so many customization options so that we could set it up like our old server so that the transition from our team was seamless. We also liked Canto's integrations with Adobe, share ability, and search/tagging/metadata functionality, as well as the ability to make and integrate portals and style guides.

The option to make a single file downloadable or not. We have some highly sensitive files and some we don't want people to be able to download but be able to look at. So it would be nice if we could make a single file not downloadable. They do have other options like terms of use or watermarks but it be nice if that was a feature. You could do this but only in bulk, so you'd have to make all files not downloadable.

First of all, having a single source of truth is truly a game changer. Having that one file that is mirrored in other places makes having to edit it so much simpler. Additionally, the Portals are such a nice feature so that we can "share" our assets, specific ones, to different vendors or departments within our organization takes a lot of the mundane aspects of our previous requests off our plates. There are truly so many things I love about Canto and these are just a small taste of them.

We are using Canto in the hopes that it can serve us in several ways. One area that we would like to see is more of a desktop app that functions similar to Dropbox in that we can access our files in our Finder vs. the Canto Connector for Adobe. Also, the ability to be more granular with our user permissions and rights management. And more customization with the Presets as well as the ability to designate the Focal Spot on an image. (We have lots of ideas to help improve and add to Canto but these are the top ones)

While most of the products were by and large the same, it came down to the User Interface, the details in the features, the customer service, and the price. Canto has been incredibly helpful and supportive from day 1.

The features available within Canto are well designed and well implemented. We needed a solution for managing various types of digital assets for different use cases, and Canto fit the bill exactly. In addition to the great product, Canto's implementation and support teams were fantastic and helped our implementation to go extremely smoothly.

There is very little to dislike about Canto. All of the features promised to us during the sales cycle were available, and we found no "gotchas" or surprises. We could have used some more guidance about how/when to use the Portals feature, but that ended up being a minor issue in our case.

The product itself is straight forward, easy to use and fairly customizable. The tagging system works great, file storage is good (once you identify what you would like), upload links are beneficial and the portals are key for deliverable.

Nachteile

The configuration of SSO does not allow enough control for the administrators of this tool, it also caused quirks for administrative accounts, where one experience via login vs via SSO was different for the admins; and the system didn't recognize licenses as being used when configured via SSO. Overall, we had to disable it for the time being which is a big loss/hit to our change management process.

The Style Guide tool is a great idea, but needs some work and should not be used as a deciding factor in the tool. It needs some more work and analysis on managing font, including details on using logos, etc. to be a proper style guide. It works well for corporate colours, and that's about it.

Lastly, the integration process needs some evaluation on the Canto side. It is lengthy, the "integration specialists" cannot answer questions that we can figure out ourselves with ease, and it doesn't seem like there is much support or guidance. In all honesty, we could do it ourselves must faster.

Canto offered a price point that we needed to close the product, with a full service solution. However, Image Relay was an awesome contender.

Vorteile

The best thing about Canto is that it just works exactly the way you expect it to. Even before I went through the official training, I found it super intuitive -- easy to upload files, easy to find them again, easy to use them with a huge range of design tools (we mostly use it with Adobe Creative Suite). Version control is going to be very helpful for us. I’m also stoked that it’s so easy to customize for our workflow. And the customer service we’ve experienced so far has also been top notch -- friendly, knowledgeable, and FAST. Thanks, Canto!

Nachteile

Nothing yet! The default settings include a lot of options we won't need, so until we finish customizing the interface it's visually distracting to see them. Still, how can you complain about having "too many" options -- especially when it's so easy to focus in on only what you really want?

I love Canto's Facial recognition feature! We have a lot of assets where we need to identify people and facial recognition has changed everything! now we can search for people by name and access every photo asset we have of that person! Game changer! I also love being able to relate files and add custom fields to assets. This has come in so handy when we need to connect people's images to their stories and FOIP information. Canto has really helped us work smarter and not harder to find all of the assets we have in a more dynamic way!

Nachteile

We have found the uploading of assets to be a little more work than anticipated. The Canto Connect desktop application is helpful but when initially setting up out canto product it is a lot of work. When you have over 20,000 assets to upload it takes a team of people to make that happen and a good amount of time to get everything uploaded.

The cost was much more financially accessible and Canto offered the facial recognition feature which the others currently did not. Also, Canto was able to connect to our Drupal websites and Adobe creative suite without much of an additional cost. Overall Canto offered the most features and the lowest cost!

Canto is an excellent digital asset management system. We love being able to search our assets even before we have spent much time tagging them. The AI features have made it easy to get basic tagging done without any time on our part.

Nachteile

It takes quite a bit of effort to get all of the assets uploaded and organized. A lot of the system has to be learned and is not intuitive.

Canto's biggest strengths are it's core ability to house all of our digital assets in an organized manner and then allow us to keyword tag each one. We have thousands of files, and it's super important for us to find the right file quickly without having to know the file title. From there, we can see versions, comments, share it, and more.

Nachteile

This software is madly expensive. Yes - it has TON of features, but what it lacks for us is disappointing when it comes to user logins and limited outside access. Their "Portals" area is a nice feature, but it's pointless when you're needing a 3rd party to simply upload their assets (from such as a photo shoot) and you have to send them a core login to do so.

I love the search functionality. It's super quick and easy to find the assets I need. Also, the share links are awesome. Everything is very user friendly.

I love how you can create share links and toggle their settings. Now, we can share videos with clients and not worry about them downloading the videos. This is also much quicker for everyone. The client can watch the video on a web browser, instead of having to download it, and depending on the video size, this can take quite some more time.

I love how you can adjust the search settings as well, to toggle what things you will search off of.

Nachteile

I wish you could quickly share "My Collections" with anyone, like create a shareable link to a collection, instead of having to select all the assets within a collection and then creating a share link.

I wish some of the tools were more readily available. For example, I have to select an asset, then the select all button will appear, so I need to make 2 clicks to select everything, when I wish it could be 1.

How customizable it is. Tons of ways to tag, folder and album content. It is extremely robust and no matter how you think through content management it can do it or the Canto team has a work around until they create the thing you want.

If I had to pick one I would say It is not intuitive. You absolutely have to re-train your brain and train your whole team on the software. But Canto provides that for you!

My team especially loves the search and tagging funtions and how easy it makes to find what we're looking for - VAST improvement over the cascading folder organization of our Windows file management.
I like that it feels similar to other file storage solutions (Dropbox, NextCloud, etc...) because we don't have to spend much time training our users on how it works.
It's super easy to upload and cateogorize new files so they show up where we want them to.

Nachteile

It might be nice to hide unused filtering options - we don't need all of them and I think some users may be overwhelmed when they see the neverending filter options and think they have to use them.

The ease with which metadata tagging can be accomplished is likely the greatest strength for our use of this product. We've managed to create a keyword/tag database that now allows us to navigate our full media catalog with ease, and has made our workflow infinitely more streamlined. The branding guideline and adobe integration is definitely an additional benefit we're looking to utilize to its fullest shortly.

We operate in a segment with non-standard products so, unfortunately, we can't use the "smart tagging" system to its full potential.However, for tagging the "minutia" (As we call it) within the photo, but not necessarily the focus, the smart tagging system is great.

The software has a bit of everything, and it just works. The most complicated element is setting up your own metadata structure, and that's really an internal conversation about organisational culture, how we think, what we need. We love the portal functionality. There are tonnes of ways to upload, and lots of nice, very different ways to add metadata to your files.

The aesthetic is slightly dated, but that's honestly a minor quibble. Sometimes keeping it simple is what helps it work so well.

My favorite thing about Canto is it's ease of use. It reminds me of iTunes a bit, there are several ways to search for assets which make it very easy for users to locate assets. I come from a background of keywords and tags and appreciate the way it is laid out in Canto and as an administrator I also love the reporting aspect, specifically the metadata activity metrics. Another huge plus is the external connections you can link to upload from Dropbox and Google Drive.

Finally their implementation team and account support is top notch. They followed through with anything we asked of them and made sure we were well trained and ready to train others. We continue to have monthly meetings with them and I learn something new every time that makes me more impressed with Canto. I highly recommend!

Nachteile

I really don't have a whole lot to complain about. I would just recommend that before your team is ready to upload from an external connection into Canto, make sure you do some up front work in your existing file structure. It makes the upload much easier, it's hard to change the file structure once assets are uploaded into Canto but there are workarounds.

The Canto upload links have helped us tremendously streamline how we ingest files. We are just starting to work with the branding templates and portals which are exciting our B2B clients that we are partnering with. Canto has allowed us to work more efficiently remotely during this time and given us peace-of-mind with their security protocols.

All the millions of features we can set up on the admin end to get what we need from contributors, and to create an easy experience for our users.

Nachteile

There are quite a few things that I feel like I should be able to do on-the-spot, but you have to go to some other place within Canto to achieve it (usually settings). Would love to see some of that streamlined, but I don't develop software - so I don't know how easy or possible that would actually be.

It feels a bit like the Adobe add-on is kind of a secondary priority, could use a bit more support and information about that, and the instructions could be more detailed.

What I like most about canto is how easy it is for me to upload my digital assets and share them with coworkers. Our company has remote employees and other companies under the umbrella. It's nice to be able to send them over to canto to get the file or even log in themselves and search for it (great search function and tagging abilities). It beats the old slower drive we were sharing before. I have not run into any problems since we started using canto at our company.

Nachteile

Such a small detail. I just don't like that you can only upload files to albums and not folders. I feel like we normally uplaod files to folders. It's so minor. really hard to find anything to complain about.

The product is really quick to set-up and provides instant connection between other document management tools such as Dropbox. Having looked around at a lot of other solutions, Canto provided all the functionality we needed at a price that is far more consistent with cloud-based tools!

Having used the system extensively over the last few months, the only criticism we would mention would be some of the automated connections - for example our Dropbox connection often stalls when refreshing. However, the customer support team are always quick to respond!

Canto makes it so easy to find what you're looking for. We used to have an on-site server holding terrabytes of files, everything from photos to design files. We'd tried to organize it several different times and just never gotten very far, and the folder structure mostly lived in 1 or 2 people's heads, so we were constantly asking designers where files were.

Now, we can just search and find things ourselves. Even browsing is so lightning-fast compared to waiting for terrabytes of thumbnails to load on our old Windows server. And the tags have been a game-changer. Suddenly we don't have to remember what we named a file; the tags will find things for us. It's incredible.

Nachteile

Unlike competitors, Canto basically gives you the software and a little minor training and lets you have at it. We felt like we could have really made use of their expertise to help set up folders and tags more strictly so we don't eventually run into an overtagging mess.

This platform has great features like version control, collections, metadata mapping, metadata import/export, user/admin controls, and much more!

Nachteile

There are limitations when it comes to customizing fields, exporting metadata, and connecting assets. The platform can be a bit "glitchy"/page often needs a reload when performing intensive tasks.

It was a ton of work to move everything over, to be honest. I was the only person working on this and because the file names that came through form our old DAM were just numbers, I had to go in and change the name of every photo.

I don't love how the brand guidelines section doesn't have colour for Pantone, and independent RGB vs CMYK. They always seem to convert to RGB although their values are different. This does not allow me to use this feature, as I cannot share out to the hotels improper colours for brand guidelines.

This is our first DAM system and I have no complaints. So far, I only wish there was a crop and then downsample options for specific images sizes instead of resize only or crop only, but we have plenty of work arounds.

We used an onsite hard drive system that was fine with people in the office but with them not, it was a mess. Plus, we used no special labeling system...so finding anything was a bear! This has changed our work flow and load. Items are easily found and integrated to Adobe.

Our team is really satisfied with how intuitive it is to use, especially with the flexibility our teams need across the state. Something that is quite underrated is how often updates are rolled out! It does take some getting used to. With the amount of options, it can be intimidating to begin toggling with settings, in fear that you'll change something that will then mess up an organizational process or user.

The slew of unique functions really help alleviate almost all of the monotonous tasks of asset generation. Teh ability to set download presets is very helpful, as well as the ability to build multiple Portals for client-facing usage.

Nachteile

Some of the folder structures were tricky to get a hang of on setup, mainly due to the unique naming of having folders and albums. But the robust search tool made up for that on the user end.

I like the tagging the most. Folder and album optimization is not as important since items can be tagged and found so easily.

We cannot use it to share images out to marketplaces, emails, dealers, etc. We can import images INTO Canto all we want, but what we really need is to be able to share these images out as well. If there was a desktop app/option that performed similarly to Dropbox's native option, that would elevate this tool.

The integration of our existing system was very fast. We had everything housed on Google Drive and then migrated it over to Canto. It was really fast and easy. The search-ability is amazing and has a really simple tagging system.

One of the main things we like about Canto is the ability to tag, share, and organize all of our digital assets in a user-friendly interface. this product is easy to use and one of the best features is the keyword and tag search usability. the integration took a bit of time because we had a large database of files to tag and upload, but now the organization of said assets is systemized and clearly defined going forward.

Integration took a bit of time because of the tagging and organization that needed to be done. this is one of the important parts but also something that was not 100% clarified. there are multiple places where the same information can be entered so we wonder if there might be a little bit of overlap or redundancy in this regard. Overall, this was all worth it to ensure our assets were properly tagged and searchable.

Not even sure on where to start but as an image library or DAM it is one of the most clunky and difficult ones I have ever used. Search functionality, uploading and downloading are some of the worst aspects.
The auto word suggest in the search is painful and easily jumps to a work you do not want, once you hit search the word you re searching for does not show in the panel and it doesn't highlight where it has found that word in the Image data.
There is no function to list images by a certain number per page.
No similar image recommendation when you are looking at a specific image.

Vorteile

Canto has an excellent set of features that help us manage our brand a little bit closer. The beautifully laid out portals are great for our other locations to be able to download without having to email us directly. The status controls help us make sure the right assets are available without the worry of assets getting in the wrong hands. Finally, Canto has a great team of support. They're always available to answer questions and resolve any issues quickly.

I have found a need to make certain things within a portal viewable and not downloadable, but that is not offered at this time.

It is customizable and all the controls are super useful. The permissions structure is great for managing governance and the client loves all the detailed options. The customizable metadata has been essential to their success. They also love the Adobe Connector and the portals and style guides. The UI is intuitive so onboarding has been smooth. It's a good value. They release new features regularly.

The tiered storage pricing by TB has been difficult for my client, but they have a strict budget so they're making it work, and Canto was the best value of all the DAM platforms we looked at.

We have only had this platform for a few months, but love how easy it is to use. It is very intuitive, but training was also provided. I like that I can just type in the type of subject matter I am looking for, and I can see photos, videos, etc. all about that subject. Or, I can narrow it down to a very specific type of file that I need, and get all that are available, too. Also like that I can have a separate URL for members of the media to use, to get access to graphics to go with their stories, rather than having to find everything for them!

The automatic tags that are added to the photos are sometimes not helpful.

When working with a large organization Canto makes it easy to share and organize pictures without ending up with many duplicates of the same file. It is easy for anyone in the group to access and download files of any size including large TIF images.

Downloading pictures via a link sent in an email can take a very long time.
