Vorteile

It essentially operates the same as github, however, it scales much better. I really enjoy gitlab, even though in some instances it isn’t free. Good choice for your next project.

Nachteile

I don’t love that’s it’s not free. It’s kind of a deal breaker for some, especially because github exists.

Vorteile

Gitlab's all in one nature stands out as its most unique feature. Instead of reelying on various other applications we can use gitlab for the purpose of version control, CI/CD, Issue Tracking, Code Reviews, Security, Container Registry, Monitoring and Analytics.

Nachteile

Nothing as of now but it feels a quite complicated due to the wide range of features but once you get the hang of it , the tools are incredibly effective.

I have been using gitlab for over 6 months now. The actions it has are amazing which has helped me to automate builds and deployments. The authentication was easy.Also, if you have previous experience with github it would not take much time for you to hoop on to this.

The UX is not very decent. Since i have a github background i find it very difficult to find the feature on the pages

GitLab permet de gérer son code source de façon efficace, en un ou plusieurs repositories privés ou publiques mais surtout de gérer des pipelines. Ces pipelines permettent d'avoir des builds en plusieurs étapes bien détaillées et de pouvoir construire des stratégies de déploiement sur des infrastructures variés.

Le gros souci que j'ai rencontré sur GitLab concerne ses modèles de pipelines que l'on peut inclure dans ceux de nos applications. Ils sont mis à jours, incluent des breaking changes et si obligent de mettre en place des garde-fous pour éviter que nos propres pipelines ne crashent à cause de dépendances sur cette partie là.

I like the philosophy of the team that built GitLab and it reflects in the product. It is open, flexible, and powerful. The CI templates make it easy to setup continuous integration on new projects and that is a huge productivity boost.

The UI feels sluggish sometimes. It just feels that everything takes a fraction of second longer and it adds up overall.

I like how easy it was to set up and configure. Adding runners (servers that build your code) was intuitive, CI/CD works fine. When you switch from GutHub, you must get used to the naming convention, but this requires only a couple of minutes to get used to.Overall I highly recommend GitLab for anyone who wants to set up such a platform on-premise.

When you switch from other tools like GitHub you see features that are missing, mainly in CI/CD. You can't update a global variable from a job and must use workarounds. The pricing is a bit high, especially for the Ultimate plan.

We needed something that we could use on our own servers. We build critical apps for our customers and we must be sure the source code stays at our own servers. GitHub Enterprise was not taken into account because of the price.

Price was the deciding factor when we made the choice.

I came to GitLab years ago from Subversion. The adoption was instant and I never looked back. I had to use other technology for different projects, such as Azure, which still packs a punch but cannot be compared to Gitlab in terms of simplicity, clarity and ease of use. Gitlab i still my go-to source control management tool.

Very little, everything was making sense to me and was easy to find.

Task management is quite nice. Allocation of incidents is working well.

Quite lazy responses from the system and a lot of mess in the interface organization. Low reporting system.

Ce que j’apprécie le moins sur Gitlab est l’ergonomie de son interface, qui s’améliore quand même au fil du temps mais n’est pas encore à hauteur de la concurrence. Il peut aussi parfois s’avérer lent.

We switched from On Premise Gitlab and using the SaaS based Gitlab is great for easy source control and over the past 3/4 years, it's become even more important part of our Software Development Lifecycle now that we are using the automated pipelines more and more.

Occasionally some of the GUI features can fail, such as auto merging, but refreshing the page and trying again it then works.

The best part about GitLab is that it is very easy to use. It has multiple functionalities, not limited to being a git repository manager, but it is a complete solution that includes version control, issue tracking and other collaboration tools. I also appreciate the flexibility it offers, providing control over data.

The thing that I like the least about GitLab is that it has quite expensive paid plans. Another thing is sometimes it takes time in loading and also SSO needs some improvements.

The working style of most of the CI/CD tools are similar in the background. The ones that has better UI and fast responses are making a difference in the market. Gitlab CI, by far has the best UI. The button clicks, flows and placement of the features are very well-designed.

The pipeline system is by far GitLabs most important feature, though the extensive offering of supporting services such as project wikis, hooks and integrations make it a flexible control center for all needs of software development.

Debugging pipelines seems to be less than an after though, with minimal support and no indication of being in anyone's focus. Monitoring seems like a lackluster proof of concept released to the public, with many issues being ignored for years and all around extremely poor support unless the only thing you want to do is monitor the default setup for the default metrics in the default view.

Developers like it and you can use labels to make it work for task management, to some extent. Facilitates proper code review and collaboration in merge requests.

Nachteile

Reporting functionality is limited compared to competitors. Would recommend it for development, but not for task/project management. Not that user-friendly for non-techies and requires a lot of customization to make it usable for sprints etc.

I liked that it was possible to have GitLab installed on-premise rather than being forced to use the Cloud version, don't get me wrong Cloud services have their place but sometimes you just have to keep things local.The GUI is also something that I find intuitive to use and this helps to ensure that we use it to the best of it's ability in terms of project management.

It can take some getting used to the workflow that GitLab likes to use if you have not used a tool like this before and I find that the structure of their tutorials is difficult to work with.Maybe I have missed something in their website, but they could improve the learning resources.

Gitlab is nice but when I first used GitLab it was very hard to know, navigate and very confusing. It will be nice if the issues' status are shown in the dashboard. Also If we wanna assign any issue with any team member, we have to go inside the issue and assign it. It will be nice if we have a quick action button every where.
