It's probably the best for a long term solution
I ran a signal service for trading through the cloud with this software. It helped keep my trading program active 24/7, although it was on the difficult size to use and after the trial was up the cost were a little higher than I expected, but it is something that many of the top companies use. Amazon will be in the cloud service industry for sometime and they have the greatest capacity over all the other competition. I would probably go with Amazon for cloud service and learn RDS for any serious cloud project.

Amazon RDS was quick to setup and has been extremely dependable. It is going to allow us to expand our offerings and abilities by providing a cloud based database that can be accessed without the need of a VPN or being on premise.
Nachteile
AWS in general can be difficult to understand. Many of the settings and features are not user friendly, even sometimes for an experienced software developer.

Low cost
I used RDS with AWS lambda services.
Vorteile
Less cost for Relational Databases in AWS. If we create an instance and configure a Database it will spend more money. But AWS RDS only calculate cost for connections and transaction not for running time.
Nachteile
Not easy to configure a Relational Database. Have to spend some time with documentations.

The best place to start with cloud computing
We are a student development team, our task is to make a dummy php website and we use the RDS as our SQL database. We are happy with the performance and the uptime
Vorteile
It is very easy to setup. I registered for the free 1 year trial when You can run an RDS database (mysql) for free, for a year. The allowed hours just cover the necessary run.
With minimal IT experience is possible to run such a database, and it's pretty fast for development purposes, but try to use Your region. It works great with other services like amazon like Elastic Beanstalk.
Nachteile
It offers a correct amount of service for basically free. I didn't need to pay yet, and I can control my costs via the dashboard

So many great features, near infinite scalability, redundancy, replication, all dead simple to set up vs. the old days of setting up and configuring servers. I can setup worldwide cluster of databases in minutes, the future is now.
Nachteile
I tried but really can't think of anything. There's so many features and settings it's like drinking fro m a firehouse but take a little time to learn everything and you'll be fine.

If you are looking for highly available RDS this is for you. It has security and all the features that needed.

Easily configurable and supports many DB types such as Oracle, MySQL etc. Backup and security is available. Hardware upgrade is much easy when you compare it with physical DB servers. Distributed architecture. Easily integrate with other AWS services.
Nachteile
Costly solution when compared with on site servers. Not friendly for RDS beginners. UI needs to be more friendly. No advanced configurations available.

Scalability is unparalleled.
Vorteile
Best thing I like about RDS is you can use any database if you don't want to use Amazon's proprietary Aurora. Other options include MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL etc. Scalability is unparalleled, you can add multiple servers for different locations for faster access. The backup server is in a different location in case something goes wrong with one location.
Nachteile
Of course, the cost is really high. Even the micro instance will cost you a few hundred dollars if you let it run a few days.

With Amazon RDS, you can choose any of the relational database engine and start using it. You will no longer need to install or set up anything, Just specify your requirements and amazon will take of rest. It is quite un-hack-able, as a user can never have ssh access to your database system. Its capacity can be increase and decrease as per needs.

It is good for first few 100GBs, but after that it becomes quite expensive.
