Vorteile

I like how it is browser based so it won't crash. That is really nice knowing you will never lose any file since you don't have to save. I also really like their tree feature to make iterations and different design options. It is really useful if you remember to use it.

Nachteile

When I press the scroll button down, it enables me to rotate the model, but if I push slightly to hard, I guess there is a second click that will send me back a page! It might just be bad luck with my mouse, but I have never had a problem with any other modeling software. I guess no one else assigns that button as a back button. I switched the controls so now to rotate I use the right mouse button, but switching from different software while working on projects throws me off because no one else uses the right mouse button to rotate. It still is lacking some things in the surfacing end of things, but has greatly improved over the last few months.

Vorteile

Easy to use and maintain, incredible software support, cloud based, no need to update. The amount of features has been growing constantly, following user requests.

Nachteile

Being a cloud based product you need to be always connected to use it. This may be an issue if you need to use it on the go, especially in foreign countries.

I have dabbled in other cad software but found it cumbersome to learn.
So I gave up and went back to my drafting skills to create all our process drawings
until I was introduced to Onshape.... WOW I found it very easy to learn and the tech support is second to none.

Nachteile

Being cloud based I sometimes find it lags sometimes but that is usually do to my internet connection.

Vorteile

- FeatureScript: helps us to automate some tedious tasks
- Continuous development with updates that are automatically in place
- Prompt and adequate response to support questions

Nachteile

- Graphic performance could here and there (e.g. sketching) be improved
- Sometimes files are hard to find (you have to think about how to organize them with labels etc)

Vorteile

Onshape support is the best, bar none. Their feature implementation has rivaled or improved upon most major CAD programs. It's extremely intuitive, clean, and easy to be productive.

Nachteile

It's relatively new so lacking some features, but they're adding important features at a good pace. Plus, you get them immediately, without installing software!

Vorteile

I was able to pick it up very quickly with my SolidWorks experience, and it seems to be the most economical option for my small business.

Nachteile

The only cons I can think to list are that even though it's the most economical option out there, it is still expensive for a small business like mine. There have only been a handful of times I wanted to do something, and the functionality wasn't there. But I was always able to find a suitable work around.

Vorteile

Runs on any platform. Low cost. Professional 3D CAD is now free to the hobbyist and cheap for professionals. No massive annual fee like AutoDesk or SolidWorks. In a few years they will be gone. Neither can adapt to cloud CAD fast enough to catch up with OnShape, and they have the baggage of giant corporations to carry. No chance.

Nachteile

Still a new product. Features are being added regularly. Struggles in performance with large circular and linear arrays.

Based on the web, access your designs anywhere from a web browser. Work at any moment, any time without being restricted to your desktop computer. The best feature is the ability to share and work collaboratively in design, with a central database and one version of the files.

Nachteile

Still missing some features to be considered a full-fledged CAD package. Performance, especially for large assemblies is very susceptible to internet speed and has high computer power demand.

I love the ability to log in from any computer, and love the simple clear interface. Customer service is incredibly helpful, always listening to issues and working to improve.

This software lets me do my CAD work more efficiently. Both at the individual level and collaboratively. And the icing on the cake is that every three weeks, there's new features to explore!

It's still young. Some features are not fully developed. Happily, most of these underdeveloped areas are on the fringes, outside of common use.

Simplicity - it is easy to learn with many valuable tutorials; being web based allows great laptop based modeling; Value - it is easy to add users.

Crashes - almost daily the software hangs, drawings are not easy to generate or customize i.e. inspection symbols/fonts/arrows, learning/using 3rd party apps is not intuitive. Too many emails from Onshape.

Vorteile

The ability to create part studios has made modeling complex assemblies vastly easier than in previous CAD software. The features are constantly being updated and the customer support has been excellent.

Nachteile

Maybe it's our internet, maybe it's something else, but I frequently get kicked out of the part studio and have to refresh my page. This happens multiple times a day, and isn't a detractor/I don't lose any progress, but it is annoying.

Fast and easy to use for me and my colleagues, possible use without fixed licence on computer, low prize and extremely easy to use for modeling all possible components, fixtures and all what just need in my daily works.

Nachteile

Fast export into 2d drawing for archivation, many supported formats for export without others plugins and very common updates from Onshape and many more ..

Vorteile

The cloud base system works well and is a robust engine. The multipart modelling give a designer a great way to design many parts together and reference them to each other. Also the user interface and the modelling logic is very easy to understand so its not cluttered with subsections of choices but an easy to comprehend and remember interface. Surfacing works nicely and also the assemblies

Nachteile

There are some little things missing like draft analysis that requires to use a second cad system just for this. Also drafting could have some more options as well as assembly parameters but I'm sure they will come there eventually.

Vorteile

In context editing is very nice, and allows for new design practices without risk of circular references. Modelling and sketching tools are straightforward and efficient. Direct DXF export is great to go to production quickly.

Nachteile

Speed is sometimes an issue when linking different docs or working on huge part studio. The sheet metal tools could be more robust to support mirroring and more complex operations.

Some serious lags, no support in Europe - we have to wait till the evening for support to answer us. Not sufficient time for documents and drawing loading.

The cloud based functionality that prevents crashing and losing any work. The customer support and feedback for solutions. The live updates as other co-workers CAD and build out products.

The lack of full features as SW in some aspects and lack of full integration with a solid FEA solution.
The drawings are lacking a few features. Some of the user interface is difficult to interact with for me such as assembling products.

Vorteile

Always available on any device. And the power to do the types of tasks we need for engineering in our business. Don't lose data. Conversion capability is seamless, especially between CAD systems and CAM systems. Tutorials are a blessing for instructing how to use.

Nachteile

Not available when we are not on-line. This is not a game changer unless I am in a cave somewhere. Some commands we don't have available, but haven't mastered the open source code to make commands ourselves. Some of the 3rd party apps are not well documented.

Vorteile

The fact that you get so much functionality in software that is COMPLETELY on the cloud is what we like most. We also like the fact that they are always enhancing the product.

Nachteile

It’s not really a “con” but I would like the ability to create model based definition models. The ability to add GD&T in 3D would be a big plus. I would also like to see integrated manufacturing and analysis like Fusion360. I know there are 3rd party add-ons but I want a single vendor.

Vorteile

I like the ability to work collaboratively. The drawing features make for professional deliverables to clients.

Nachteile

Runs slowly at higher complexity models. Could use some more presentation and collaboration tools like screen capture notations and notes tied to parts or features.

Cloud based. Can access it from anywhere. This is helpful when I'm traveling. I also like that there is no need to update the software. When I log in it's always the latest version.

It's newer so some of the feature tools I was used to in solid works aren't available in onshape. It's always improving though and I have seen missing feature tools created.

I like the cloud idea. I can work everywhere. Of course on tablet and phone it is different, but it is okay for checking and presenting. I like the regular updates.

It is leaking too much RAM from my PC. There is a problems working on old PC platforms. Not working with internet explorer. Sometimes clients have only IE installed.

The best part is the collaborative aspect of Onshape, the ability to design complex parts and assemblies that are all interlinked. It is super easy to create parts and easily turn them into functional assemblies directly from the part. The ability to do versioning keeps a clean organization of large projects.

Nachteile

There is no offline feature unfortunately. It would definitely be easier to work with and without internet so that working is not limited to a good internet connection.

Vorteile

It aids Colaboration by mutiple people being able to view and work on the same document at the same time.

Can't do everything we need it to yet. Especially certain aspects of drawings. It would be nice to save screen captures to make hand sketches on them and save them withfile.

Fast and easy to use and learn, the platform has multi user capability and you can work together on projects. All of your drawings are saved in one location. Updates are clearly communicated and presented well.

Occasionally we struggle with internet due to our location and without internet it does not work. Sometimes bigger drawings take a long time to react to commands

Since it's all web based, I do not need a powerful computer as you would for other CAD softwares. Great to use on a MacBook.

1. Applying mates is not as simple as in SolidWorks
2. Keyboard shortcuts (ability to go to isometric view quickly, etc)

The main limitation with CAD is how expensive it is. Then you have a license that is only good for so long before you need to purchase a new and more expensive license. Onshape is perfect for people looking for a funcational CAD without the prohibitive cost. It will do just about all that the major CAD programs will do. It's cloud based so you don't need a fast computer, just a fast internet connection so you can get to your work from anywhere.

Nachteile

The program isn't quite as powerful as the mainstream CAD programs out there, but it definitely is the best bang for your buck

OnShape is very easy to learn and intuitive to use. It makes use of a browser and does all the heavy computing in the cloud means that you can get away with creating great 3D models without having a super CAD machine at your disposal.

The fact that it is a subscription based license model and is priced in US dollars makes it very expensive to use commercially in developing countries.

We started using Onshape as a less expensive alternative to Solidworks for simpler design work (e.g. 3D prints for simple prototype parts) and it quickly became the go to CAD software for our company. The cloud system is key since it allows multiple people to log in from their own computers instead of needing dedicated CAD computers.

Nachteile

Some of the import features could be improved. Particularly importing assembly files from other CAD programs.

tools are intuitive to a work flow, sketch tools are unintrusive and easily manged. surface modeling is picming up very well and drawings have come a long way

doesnt have a good free fea. fusion 360 costs me about 1 to 2 months of onshape and lasts for a whole year. also i cant scale in specified directions. its only uniformly. more attention should be given to having key base tools that give a wide range of skills easily.

I tried on shape because I needed a software what would work whereever I was and from whatever computer I was working on. Great browser based cad software that works just about in any environment. Files are stored in the cloud so they can be accessed from anywhere.

Nachteile

There is a learning curve when starting with a new cad software. Controls are different then AutoCAD

I like how it is cloud based and I don't have to worry about storing any information. I also like the history tracking application and that it remembers everything I have ever changed and when.

I loath the the branched versions and how it seems to not like to merge with the original main branch. This leaves most at my company confused over which version is up to date and leaves models very incorrect. I also do not like how the models do not auto update and I do not care for the mating technique onshape has gone with. It is very tough to get a good handle on and leaves most of us frustrated and spending too much time for what should be an easy mates.

OnShape doesn't choke on operations that some of my other tools struggle with. It is very stable, has a nice clean interface, and is pretty intuitive.

Nachteile

The STEP exporter doesn't always generate a readable file for some of my clients/toolmakers and I have to port the model through Fusion 360 to get a usable STEP file. When the feature list gets extensive, processing and updating can slow to a crawl. A color-coded feature list would be a nice option, as it becomes difficult to navigate when it gets long. I would love some rendering capabilities. Spherical patterning would be great too.

Support is responsive, pricing is fine, love the 'pay by the use' subscription format for advanced features seldom used like FEA. Will be a great all around CAD platform for small flexible companies like ours when its fully featured. I'm very interested in seeing what CAD designed without 20 years of baggage will look like when OnShape is mature.

Nachteile

OnShape is not quite ready for us to use on our bigger projects. Like watching the Matrix movies I'm dying to figure out how they keep 'branches' and the current 'versioning' paradigms and also allow part and assembly configurations that should not require an exact linear history. I really hope they do better than the Matrix movies in closing the loop.

My number one favorite feature is the portability. This software is the most available CAD software out there. No software to install, all I need is a web browser and I am right there with my projects. No other parametric CAD system can match that.

The biggest con I have for the software is the lack of features. However, due to its roots in the web the software is always being updated and features are always being added.

I love how I can work on onshape anywhere that I have internet. I also love that it is free and I can refer people to it with the perk that anyone can do it for free. Most of the features are super intuitive.

There are some more complicated geometries that I have attempted to do that will not work. Also the customer support is very friendly but as for helping me with problems they have been somewhat unable to help.
