Vorteile

My previous experience was with Autodesk Product Design Suite and Vault Professional. Onshape eliminates the file management and IT overhead and brings some new concepts in multibody modeling and version control that greatly increases design efficiency. All for a price considerably less than the competition.

Nachteile

Very little to dislike. There are some major differences in modeling in Onshape vs Inventor, etc. which take some getting used to. Onshape will require internet connection but this has never been a real issue for me.

Vorteile

OnShape will change the way companies think about CAD in the future, it is truly a mobile solution for CAD and can be run on ANY platform!

Nachteile

At this point, OnShape is very sensitive to internet speed and quality of connection, the 2D drawing capabilities are improving, however still lacking a few basic features like Auto-Balloon and Partial Section Views.

I like how it is a cloud based software that allows you to collaborate with others on similar projects.

Nachteile

It definitely is not as powerful and lacks many features that are accessible in other CAD programs such as Solidworks.

Vorteile

It's powerful, yet easy to use. I explore various ideas and can see right away if they are going to work or not, without huge investment in physical prototypes. It has saved me in our development (we are a startup).
It's been very easy to use and I have not had any problems. In fact new features come all the time, making it even better.

Vorteile

Cloud access so you can use OnShape anywhere with no install necessary. The UI is clean and minimal, and most controls are intuitive. Customer support is quick and helpful.

Nachteile

Needs good internet connection for best performance. Load times are sometimes long for more complicagted parts/assemblies.

Vorteile

File management and collaboration of the future! Mates are more efficient. Studio space that allows largely static assemblies to be designed in context without making the mess of SolidWorks is great.

Nachteile

Very efficent tools, but workflow is a little encumbered by simpler menu options than competition. As the pricing continues to rise, it become hard to justify purchasing licenses to work in parallel with SolidWorks. Please do not remove month by month subscriptions. This is the most compelling cost feature that can enable flexible teams.

Vorteile

Using it on any device with an internet connection. Having access to all of my models on the go and being able to collaborate with other team members.

Nachteile

It can still use a few of the more advanced features, but I know they are working on it. Large models on a slow or weak connection can take awhile to load and modify.

Vorteile

The ability to coloborate so effectively, and the ability to have everything pulled from the cloud is amazing.

Nachteile

It's a little less powerful than some CAD programs at this point, which is quickly changing and I expect will no longer be the case in no time.

I liked the original free version, however they ended up changing the service so it's not what it used to me.

It was easy to use with many great features you'd expect from a modeling software.

Nachteile

Incredibly SLOW!!! Always waiting for the servers to catch up with my actions. No offline capabilities so if the network went down, so did my workflow.

The use of the software has an unlimited amount of possibilities.

The software is very tedious making it sometimes frustrating

Doesn't crash, very stable. It is easy to find what I'm looking for. I like how things like measurements are automatically available.

Nachteile

Some drawing deficiencies. Dual units on a drawing would be good. Also, curved centerlines. The drawings seem to be a bit prone to glitches - a little, not a lot.

Vorteile

Lots of essential features for professional mechanical CAD. Interface is intuitive and doesn't get in your way. Very easy to learn. Does not require a top of the line computer.

Nachteile

Internet connection required to use. Missing some surface repair features for dealing with broken imported models. That's it really.

Vorteile

The workflow is very familiar to any Solidworks user, but with a lot of the superfluous constraints or other hindrances removed. Designing parts, part families and drawing in Onshape is intuitive, with plenty of resources available to answer questions if you run into stumbling blocks. The stability of the software has been flawless, with minor hiccups being rapidly fixed by the outstanding customer support team. I am advocating Onshape to every design engineer and startup I meet, it is that impressive.

Nachteile

The fact that it requires a live internet connection is a little bit of a logistical hassle when traveling between clients and working remotely. However, when compared to the issues that a lot of Solidworks users have interfacing with license servers remotely, the portability of the software is still market leading.

Great alternative to more expensive platforms and it is rewarding to be a part of a growing and responsive new software that shakes up the industry.

Nachteile

OnShape does not have all the functionality of its competitors, but is building more functionality in on a monthly basis.

Onshape has an unbeatable price (premium and free) for the functionality.

Nachteile

I would like to have analysis tools (FEA, Flow, etc) for a better design application. Without these features (common to SolidWorks) this is a great drafting tool but lacks features as an engineering tool

I love the new innovations for assemblies - it makes designing much faster/more intuitive. The boolean function has also saved me quite a bit! I haven't used the sharing functions much, but the few times I have had to send people links of the CAD models to review it has been quite useful. The professional training was easy to follow and very helpful as well.

Nachteile

I haven't used it enough to have any real complaints at this time. So far the combination of price and ease of use has me sold on using it in the future.

Vorteile

OnShape's features are typically easy, faster, and more intuitive to use than other CAD packages and are supported by very approachable documentation.

No worries about versioning, saving, or sharing.

Always getting new features means its easier to stay personally up to date with the latest functionality.

Nachteile

Some key functionality is still lacking (namely advanced sheet metal).

It seems to know when I'm trying to show it off and run more slowly.

OnShape is an affordable CAD package for a business that is just starting out and has just a few users and is not interacting with many outside vendors or partners. By being accessible in a browser on any machine, it also makes great sense for a mobile and dispersed team.

Nachteile

At this time, it is not used by enough organizations to be useful once we grow. Many of the features that we will need come standard (albeit for a higher price) on the CAD packages that are more industry standard. And although the cloud-based implementation is great, it can sometimes be frustratingly slow. This would drag down productivity in a larger organization.

Vorteile

That it is browser based, all data in one place and the new possibilities this gives. That it auto update every 3rd month. That it is open source. That it is super fast to model.

Nachteile

The graphics is not there yet. The icons are to simulere and difficult to tel apart. Some times you have to look around to find the command you need. More colors might help.

Vorteile

Intuitive and clean. I feel like I have been using this for years. It has felt that way once I went through the bootcamp program. I feel like I can focus on the design and less on how to complete the task of making the designs. File management is great. Parametric software is a must have and versioning is easy. Most information can be found online from their webinars.

Its the only software I want to use. It makes my job easier and more efficent. I finishing my jobs faster equaling better profits, but even more the clients happy.

Nachteile

in locations with poor internet service you will have some difficulties, but only with large files.

Vorteile

We have been using Onshape for the purpose of product development.
This tool provides for convenient part-modeling.
Access to cloud makes it portable and we can work from anywhere.
It also provides for a very good collaborative sessions due to its real time sharing functionality.

Nachteile

The document loading through cloud could be faster, although this might be more of a server issue than the application itself.
Other than some slowness and performance issues, this tool works good for our use.

Vorteile

Ease of use, always up to date, multi-platform. Being self taught in CAD in general, I've found it very easy to get what I need out of the software. And it has improved my ability to discuss designs with clients.

Nachteile

The dependence on an internet connection can be a hindrance when walking clients through models in locations with poor internet connections like cafes and many corporate "guest wifi" locations.

Vorteile

Speed (once updating, computer, windows, internet)
Master modeling capabilities and part management within documents.
Revision and history control!
Being about to share designs with clients that are not software savy over the phone.

Nachteile

All functionality of solidworks isn't there (love the improvements every 3 weeks)
Drawing capabilities are lagging but are getting better.

Vorteile

Cloud-based, which enables access from almost any PC or tablet, collaboration with remote people, and easy sharing of designs for feedback from team.

Nachteile

The feature set is still being fleshed out, so I occasionally hit something I either can't do, or have to kludge a workaround.

Vorteile

Flexibility and workflow from the platform and the fact that we can have engineers working remotely easily. Great cooperation too.

Nachteile

So so Solidworks integration as models do not always import properly. Also a lot of the features are harder for Solidworks users to grasp.

Vorteile

It is extremely easy to use and to share parts between people.

Nachteile

It doesn't have all of the functionality of Solidworks, especially with holes/threads and lofts. And you can't work offline.

Vorteile

Work from anywhere on any machine. Never worry about saving again. Versioning is simple. No more confusion as to latest file.

Nachteile

The whole wold isn't on it yet. Surfacing is getting way better, but still has room for improvement.

I like most the fact that I can easily work on a multipart. The modeling tools are really grated. And all of this with the advantages of the cloud

Drafting still feels limited. Part studio misses draft analysts and collision detection. Text tool is a bit slow

Onshape is positioned to upend the design and CAD industry. The ease of use is just amazing, log in from any decent computer (i.e. doesn't have to be a workstation) and get to work right away. Instant sharing of models, revision control, and a drafting toolset that matches any of other packages, what's not to like?

Nachteile

Aggressive marketing/up-selling, even for small business and hobby users. I know that they're working hard to take on legacy players, but it's very strange to get a cold call about upgrading for business use when you're just using a software for a quick project or two (at the beginning).

Vorteile

Easily accessable anywhere with internet connection. Ability to create custom tools is extremely helpfull!

Nachteile

Some tools are not fully developed or implemented but they are added every update. Surface tools are limited.

This is a great free alternative for cad software. It is very easy to learn. It's easy to import parts from manufacturers

It needs a caM system to a full featured program

Browser accessibility, live collaboration, app integration! Being able to share with customers instantly is also a great perk.

Nachteile

Having to integrate with so many different third party apps/softwares (animations, mechanism simulation, FEA, etc.) is a bit annoying. Solidworks does it all. I realize this is asking for a lot, but I suppose that's what competition is for.

This is very powerful 3D design software. It looks to me like the collaboration potential is also excelent

There is a learning curve, but again this is powerful complex 3D design software

The regular updates are great! Everyone using the same version of the software is really nice. And being able to use Onshape on multiple devices, not worrying about license codes, yay!

still working with traditional CAD users is sometimes hard because of the compatibility issues. but hopefully this won't be an issue forever.

Being 100% cloud-based allows accessibility from anywhere, on any device with no need for high computing power or installation. Combined with amazing collaborative capabilities, this makes Onshape an incredibly powerful tool to create, manage, and share projects.

Nachteile

The way that Onshape handles versioning, though capable, is rather difficult to get a solid handle on.

Vorteile

Ease of use, especially after using other software previously. The UI elements make it intuitive to be able to create complex models, with tutorials always available if needed. Version control and ease of sharing parts and assemblies between engineers is something I've never had access to with other software. The availability of this feature with OnShape is amazing!

Nachteile

Large part studios or assemblies slow down the rendering time, dependent on internet availability and GPU of computer. Lack of surfacing techniques isn't needed, but it would be cool. Being able to calculate static forces across a part in an assembly would be great as well.

Vorteile

Runs on any machine, never loses my work, is stupid easy to share, and allows me to modify solid model geometry made in other software.

Nachteile

Dealing with assemblies or studios with 100+ bodies. It doesn't matter if I computer with a unicorn for a CPU and GPU, OnShape still becomes unbearable slow with full assemblies.

Vorteile

Really, REALLY slick web interface and mobile app. Designing parts and mechanisms from any computer, just wow! Quickly sharing, very good version tracking - it's the real deal.

Nachteile

They started out positioned very nicely for small-time users, 10 private documents, but switched to "public only" free documents at the same time as they aggressively pushed for subscriptions.

Vorteile

Automatic saving feature that includes version control and the ability to track all changes. I have never had the program crash and compromise my work like EVERY other CAD software has.

Nachteile

Not really a con but there are many updates happening and sometimes it is hard to keep up. Yet, I am happy to see Onshape continually seeking to improve and listen to customer needs.

Vorteile

Cloud storage and lack of having to install software makes this convenient to access wherever i am. Easy to use and learn had me creating many intricate designs very rapidly. Works great for doing 3d printing.

Nachteile

On slower connections can take sometime to load up the more intricate drawings . Adding custom tools could be simplified.

Nachteile

1) No new features , that can be only found in onshape.
2) Sheet metal feature needs more update, like bend, unbend,.. etc
3) Changing the thickness of border lines in onshape is not possible.
4) Lack of exploded view feature.
5) BOM needs to be emphasized more.

its easy to use, cloud based makes it easier to use anywhere. Very simple design makes life easier but at times it can be slow.

Its slow in loading on internet. hard to manage files for one single project.I prefer Synchronous Technology on the Ordered one as its easier and makes it very easy to modify drawings.

Surfacing toolset is still limited. Onshape needs to include certain basic toolsets (FEA and rendering) as part of core app. Experience in partner apps inconsistent.

Organization and flow of product iterations is a great feature. Being able to create versions and branch from original design allows for quick concept creation.

Nachteile

Rendering capabilities rely on 3rd party applications. It would be great to have that function built into the software.

Vorteile

It is flexible and intuitive, and the collaboration features are very useful. The modeling and sketching is on par with the competition, and the drawing generation is pretty solid. It is very quick and easy to throw together a multibody part and produce a drawing for fabrication.

Nachteile

The assembly paradigm is different enough that it doesn't always achieve the goals you had planned. If you are used to multibody parts, you will have a better time than if you prefer assembly level modeling . The drawing tools are somewhat lacking, especially in terms of robust bills of material and welding call outs.

Vorteile

The only real ubiquitous CAD software.
Available on multiple platform, Linux and Mobile included.
Very pleasing for the eye.

Nachteile

No complex 3D surfacing capabilities like Rhino.
Need to be a programmer to take advantage of FeatureScript.
Sometimes can be painful to work with with a slow connection.

Easy to find answers to questions online, or at least can find out if a specific feature exists. Can share documents easily, even if they aren't CAD docs

Nachteile

Missing functionality compared to similar products, steep learning curve (probably unavoidable), data security concerns from the business model
